Doris Möncke, glass science professor, visits university in Brazil, offers short course, seminar

Doris Möncke, associate professor of glass science at Alfred University, spent two weeks in March at the Vitreous Materials Laboratory/Federal University of São Carlos in Brazil. She presented a short course and a seminar and engaged in discussions with students and faculty.

Möncke, who was a visiting professor at Federal University March 1-15, shared her knowledge in glass research through a short course was titled “Light, Colors, and Glasses” and engaged students, post-doctoral researchers, and faculty in discussions on glass structure and color.

She also presented what Edgar Dutra Zanotto, professor of materials science and engineering and founder and director of the Vitreous Materials Laboratory, called a “thought provoking seminar” on the abridged history of glass technology and chemistry. Zanotto gave the 2019 Scholes Lecture in glass science in 2019.

“Her visit sparked valuable discussions and enriched our understanding of these fascinating materials,” Zanotto said of Möncke’s visit to the Federal University of São Carlos.

Möncke’s visit to Brazil was made possible by grant funding for visiting professors from CAPES, a foundation within Brazil’s Ministry of Education dedicated to improving the quality of Brazil’s faculty and staff in higher education.
