Saxon women's volleyball team set to compete in NCAA Regional
The Alfred University women's volleyball team, fresh off winning the first Empire 8 Conference title in program history, travels to Cambridge, MA, to play host Massachusetts Institute of Technology in a first-round NCAA Division III Championship Tournament match at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 16.
The 64-team NCAA tournament field competes in eight single-elimination regionals. The Saxons (14-13) are one of eight teams playing in the Cambridge Regional, hosted by MIT (29-4), the 20th-ranked team in the nation. Other teams competing in the Cambridge Regional are Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, Gettysburg, Salisbury, SUNY Cortland, UMass Dartmouth, and Williams.
If Alfred defeats MIT, the Saxons will play the winner of Thursday’s Gettysburg-Cortland match at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 17. The Cambridge Regional championship match is set for 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18.
Alfred earned an automatic bid to the NCAA championships when the Saxons, seeded fifth in the Empire 8 Conference Tournament, won consecutive road matches against fourth-seeded Nazareth, top-seeded St. John Fisher, and third-seeded Keuka. Alfred had lost all three matchups against those opponents during the regular season.
