Alfred University professor Steven Pilgrim on panel discussion of Smithsonian film

Steven Pilgrim, professor of materials science and engineering in Alfred University’s Inamori School of Engineering, participated in a panel discussion for the Smithsonian film “America’s Hidden Stories: Forged in Slavery.”

The film documents the roles of African-Americans in the industrial foundation of the United States.  The focus is Catoctin Furnace—an ironworks operation opened in Frederick County, Maryland, in 1776—which, at various times in its approximately 140 years of operation, had enslaved people, free people of color, and European-Americans among its workforce.

Pilgrim participated in the panel discussion following the film’s June 6 premier. The film can be viewed at 8 p.m. Monday, June 12, on the Smithsonian Channel and on Paramount+.
