Alfred University appoints dean for Student Experience

Thomas Orrange is joining Alfred University as dean for Student Experience, Amy DeKay, vice president for Student Experience, announced Thursday, June 15. His appointment became effective Monday, June 26.


Orrange comes to Alfred from Medaille University, where he served 18 years, most recently as library director. Previously at Medaille, he served as interim dean of the School of Leadership, Science and Technology, and director of EQUIP, a program which integrated high impact practices into the curriculum to promote student engagement and persistence. He also chaired the Medaille’s Faculty Council.

“Tom is a visionary leader committed to supporting students throughout their academic journey,” DeKay stated. “He is creative and innovative, encouraging collaboration to develop strategies aimed at helping students find their purpose and achieve their goals.”

During his 18 years at Medaille, Orrange was a fixture in the library, helping to build a strong community and a positive environment for student success. In addition to this role, he sat on the core planning team for the university strategic plan and was a member of the Institutional Assessment Coordinating Team. He also served on the Middle States self-study steering group, and as co-chair of a Middle States self-study working group. 

“Throughout his career Tom has been committed to creating a safe and inclusive learning and work environment for all,” DeKay said.

Orrange earned his bachelor's degree in history from D’Youville University and his master’s degree in library science from the State University of New York at Buffalo. He has experience working with first-year experience programs and the high school-to-college transition programs and has managed academic and student success areas, including advisement and grant funded programs.
