Second 2023 Riley Lecture to discuss reproductive rights in Latin America
Cora Fernández Anderson, associate professor of comparative politics at Mount Holyoke College, will deliver Alfred University's second Riley Lecture of 2023 on Tuesday, March 21.
Fernández Anderson will present a talk titled “Fighting for abortion rights. Lessons from Latin America.” Her talk will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Zoom. Registration is required. After registering, a confirmation email will be sent containing information about joining the meeting.
Fernández Anderson’s research is focused on social movements in Latin America, particularly those advancing reproductive rights. She is the author of "Fighting for Abortion Rights in Latin America. Social Movements, State Allies and Institutions" (2020, Routledge).
In the last decade, Latin America has seen significant progress toward the protection of reproductive rights, particularly the right to legal, safe, and free abortion. Abortion is now legal in Uruguay, Argentina, Colombia, and many of Mexico's states, and strong campaigns demanding legalization are present in almost every other country. After the repeal of Roe v. Wade this past June, what can the US learn from the struggle for abortion rights in Latin America? An analysis of the strategies and frames used by Latin American activists will offer some insights into this question.
The Riley Lecture is named for Alfred University graduates Charles Riley ’35 and Elizabeth Hallenbeck Riley ’36, a local activist involved in women's rights issues. Their daughters, Pamela Riley Osborn ’62, Patricia A. Riley ’65, and Melissa Riley sponsor the lecture series in memory of their parents.
